Rob Garcia: Place Of Resonance

Drummers have produced some of the more dynamic jazz recordings of late. Jason Marsalis’ Music in Motion ; Brian Blade’s Perceptual ; Ginger Baker’s Coward of the County ; and Jeff Tain Watt’s Citizen Tain, are just a few that have showcased rhythm masters who display pinache and deep skill in their trade. Add another one to the list:Rob Garcia’s stellar outing: Place of Resonance. All good jazz drummers have an acute sense of timing and exceptional perception of sound. This is evident on every selection, whether it’s a delicate cymbal work or tight rhythms. Rob Garcia’s skill is one that is effectively a quiet exercise of control. Intricate and delicate rhythms create sound environments that soothe the listener on selections such as the atmospheric ‘Somewhere along the Path’, whereas as his swing is in full effect on the selection ‘REM’. Listen to the tender drum solo on the cut ‘Dibs’. Garcia is in complete control of his craft. The selections on the CD are thought provoking, playful, and will linger in the listener’s mind. He invites the listener to have an experience of self-awareness that would take one beyond merely listening with ears and intellect. A sort of musical therapy for the heart and soul. This is beautiful music.

Exquisite arrangements, choice selections, and an excellent ensemble of musicians help to propel this session to even higher ground. One of the real treats throughout the recording, are the airy offerings of flautist Michel Gentile whose solos are stylized and reminiscent of the great Eric Dolphy. Reedman Mat Renzi delivers depth and soul as pianist Dave Kikoski provides spirit with challenging comps and soloing on selections like ‘(A jump In) Quicksand’. Michael Formanek keeps it all together with his deep robust sound that solidifies why he is one of the most talented jazz bassists today. Two selections feature violinist Miri Ben–Ari who performs with fire and heart. Garcia’s talent, skill, and energy, on Place of Resonance, provides a musical healing balm that any true jazz fan should apply and enjoy. Highly recommend.
