Ted Nash & Still Evolved: In the Loop
Nash, 46, has a creative tenor style and enjoys the freedom that this format allows. There's more space per individual when you've only got five artists on the bandstand. Each member of this veteran quintet comes through with unique overtures that leave a lasting impression.
The extended interpretation that Nash and his band give to "Durning's Dance leaves plenty of room for great blowing and an enjoyable romp. Like "In the Loop, this piece carries a distinctly western sound—as in cowboys, chuck wagons, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Sonny Rollins' Way Out West album. Nash and his ensemble bring these impressions out clearly and have fun in the process.
Both Nash and Marcus Printup give the album a strong taste of excitement. From impressions of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to dramatic performances with hearts afire, Still Evolved gets it all in there. As the album closes with "Push, you can feel the natural energy that drives these five veteran artists to their creative highs.
