Sandy Patton - Thomas Dürst: Painting Jazz Vol. 2
A parte qualche eccezione, il repertorio di questo disco comprende brani originali dei due protagonisti e temi che difficilmente troviamo nel songbook delle classic jazz singer, come "Gymnopedie No. 1" di Erik Satie, "Libertango" di Astor Piazzola, "Dolphin Dance" di Herbie Hancock o "Serenade to a Cuckoo" di Roland Kirk, che la stessa cantante ha provvisto di un testo.
Sandy Patton vive da due decenni in Svizzera dov'è stata docente di canto presso il dipartimento Jazz dell'Università Hochschule der Künst di Berna. Prima di trasferirsi in Europa ha collaborato con celebri nomi come Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie e Paquito D'Rivera e continua ad avere un'intensa attività concertistica (s'è esibita più volte anche in Italia) anche se la sua principale occupazione è legata alla didattica.
Lo stile della Patton si colloca sulla linea Sarah Vaughan anche se nel timbro ricorda maggiormente Betty Carter. È una cantante di valore ed insieme all'ottimo bassista Thomas Dürst sviluppa un percorso caratterizzato da eleganza ed equilibrio. Lo spessore timbrico e il calore colloquiale con cui affronta da subito il famoso tema di Kirk creano aspettative che però non vengono sempre appagate nel corso del disco: i percorsi sono un po' troppo uniformi e tendono a generare monotonia.
