Jacob Anderskov Trio: On The Loose

On The Loose is exactly what the title implies for the latest release by the Jacob Anderskov Trio. Free-flowing, in the moment, and performed with abandon yet complete control, the music is a good representation of a modern piano trio that is not limited to standards or idioms of the past but instead thrives to stretch for creative expression.

Young Danish pianist Anderskov has made an impression with fans and critics as an artist who shows no fear for pushing the boundaries of modern jazz. Also featuring two other like-minded artists—drummer Anders Mogensen and respected bassist Michael Formanek—the trio is a conduit of intensity and energy.

Think shades of early Keith Jarrett but more so of Jason Moran, with whom Anderskov reportedly took lessons. Add the formidable bass of Formanek, who has recorded with names like Joe Henderson, Greg Osby, and Tim Berne; and set it off with a percussive barrage by Mogensen.

When listening to the music, it's best to turn up the volume because there is a lot going on here. Like a sonic boom, the music is at times assaulting, but it's also filled with shifting rhythmic shapes, inspired musicianship, and sheer atmosphere. All of the compositions were written by Anderskov, who reveals maturity and insight with playing that is inspired by jazz: modern music with empathy for trio communication.

Whether on the jungle-esque lines of "Alibaba's Inauguration, the delicateness of "Exercise In Disguise, the "shortcut" snippets, or the ominous beginnings of "Tunesian Thorofare, each composition is performed with passion and sparks magic among the musicians. Formanek is always impeccable with powerful bass and bowing skill. Anderskov's piano is probing, cerebral, frenzied, and very satisfying, while Mogensen provides a multi-colored drum canopy. For fans of progressive piano trios, On The Loose is highly recommended.
