Marc Copland/John Abercrombie/Kenny Wheeler: Brand New
The trio's second release for this Dutch jazz record label rings something akin to enjoying one of life's guilty pleasures. On this effort, highly-regarded pianist Marc Copland realigns with two modern jazz heroes, trumpeter/flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler and guitarist John Abercrombie. And it's clearly about like-minded peers merging their distinct voices for a unification of the jazz spirit. The artists' classy enactments are constructed upon linear motifs, counterbalanced by diminutive choruses and soaring melody lines. The respective musicians contribute self-penned works, including their zealous rendering of trumpeter Nat Adderley's classic "Jive Samba.

Enamored by gorgeous soloing ventures and effective use of space, the trio's totality and distinctly identifiable musical connection speaks proverbial volumes throughout. Nonetheless, their aura comprises majestic interactions and profound statements resulting in a fruitful symbiosis that is apparent from beginning to end. (A top pick for 2005.)
