Charlie Mariano - R.A. Ramamani: Om Keshav

L'incontro fra il sassofonista americano e la cantante indiana risale al 1979, anno in cui gli Embryo, rock band tedesca in cui Charlie Mariano militava, durante un tour mondiale si trovarono a suonare a Bombay, incontrando appunto R.A. Ramamani. Non era la prima volta che musicisti di provenienze così diverrse si trovavano a fare musica insieme, basti pensare alle tre incisioni di Joe Harriott con il progetto Indo-Jazz Fusion.

Qui, tuttavia, la collaborazione é continuata e già l'anno dopo il Karnataka College of Percussion visitava Monaco di Baviera, mettendo le basi per una musica che nel tempo ha tratto da ambedue le tradizioni. Un East meets West insomma, che è andato al di là di una collaborazione casuale.

È così per anni Charlie Mariano ha visitato con regolarità l'India e questa incisione è un'altra perla che si aggiunge ad altre. R.A. Ramamani canta testi tradizionali, che vengono accompagnati dagli strumenti del suo paese e dal sassofono del musicista americano insieme alla chitarra elettrica di Amir Heri, che riesce a mettere insieme su "Guru's Govinda" il funky ed i suoni orientali, oltre a prendere qua e là degli assoli di stampo "occidentale".

L'idea di abbattere barriere obsolete funziona particolarmente bene, rendendo giustizia all'idea di base. I suoni orientali colpiscono particolarmente, specie la magica voce di R.A. Ramamani. Se a questo si aggiunge l'intensità che emana il sax alto di Mariano, che spesso riprende la melodia originale del brano e la ridà al suo tipico modo, ci si rende conto di come questa incisione vada al di là di una session di musica world in cui un paio di esotismi vengono messi insieme su un ritmo europeo. Qui il rispetto reciproco ed il dialogo che iniziato decenni fa danno vita ad una musica senza confini, che stimolerà le abitudini musicali degli ascoltatori, occidentali ed orientali.

La traduzione in inglese dei testi permette di dare uno sguardo ravvicinato al mondo spirituale indiano, le note di copertina, in tedesco, del produttore Othmar Schreckeneder, invece, rimangono un mistero per i più.
