Kristina: Offshore Echoes

Ha un nome da ragazza della porta accanto, Kristina. Sangue indiano, africano e tedesco, la sua voce è rotondeggiante e aggraziata. Non sarà Anita Baker, non sarà esuberante come Dee Dee Bridgewater, caratterizzante come Cassandra Wilson o abbraccerà le quattro ottave di Sarah Jane Morris, ma la nostra Katrina ha una voce limpida e cristallina come acqua che scende dalle Alpi.

Attacca i brani con un'intonazione che riscalda all'istante. Non una smagliatura, non orpelli né ghirigori. La sua è un'espressività genuina che porta in giro l'ascoltatore attraverso l'Africa (la riproposizione latin del classico dei Police, "Tea in the Sahara"), Cuba ("Cherokee"), il Brasile ("Take Me to Aruanda"), il Perù ("Valentin"), la Jamaica ("The 59th Street Bridge Song" virata in reggae/calypso) e i rispettivi generi musicali.

Ma tra le tante citazioni di vocalist prestigiose non ne nasconde una che alla fine fa la differenza: Sarah Vaughan. "Tenderly" è un tributo di sangue e lacrime che Kristina rende a quella che sembra essere la sua vera fonte di ispirazione.

La big band che la supporta (la produzione e l'arrangiamento del disco sono affidati a Wayne Wallace) le disegna scenari musicali che sono all'occorrenza timbricamente romantici (il caso di "Tenderly") o pirotecnici ("Ilu Ayé" è una botta di samba caliente).

"Offshore" (di generi) che per una volte mette d'accordo tutti.
