October Jazz Heats Up St. Louis Autumn

Jazz at the Bistro conrinues its concert series in October with a couple of fine local bands and the excellent Brazilian duo of vocalist Luciana Souza and guitarist Romero Lubambo. Souza and Lubambo perform Oct. 18 through the 21, and top local blues singer Kim Massie returns to the Bistro Oct. 27 and 28. And make sure to check out Good 4 the Soul, a top instrumental quartet made up of Adaron Jackson, John King, Shaun Robinson and James Jackson Oct. 13 & 14. As usual, sets at 8:30 and 10:15 each evening for all Jazz at the Bistro performances.

This month, The Sheldon Concert Hall continues its special "Notes From Home series of jazz concerts in conjunction with the release of Dennis Owsley's book on the history of St. Louis jazz, City of Gabriels: A History of Jazz in St. Louis, 1895-1973, and the special exhibition of area jazz memorabilia and artifacts on display in the Sheldon Art Galleries. The concert on October 17 will honor Jazz Central, an early St. Louis jazz octet that recorded in the 1950s for the then fledgling Delmark label. For more info, call 314-952-5092. Admission is $6.

At Washington University, the Holmes Lounge jazz series continues Thursday Oct. 12 with a performance by guitarist Steve Schenkel and members of the Fox/MUNY Orchestra in a special performance dedicated to Dave Engelke. The series continues Oct. 26 with a duo performance by pianist Peter martin and drummer Maurice Carnes. All concerts in the series are free and start at 8 p.m. For more info, call 314-935-4841. Webster University's Jazz Series continues with a special concert benefiting the TKT Memorial Scholarship Fund. Entitled "The Best of Broadway, the concert features vocalists Ralph Butler, Charlie Glenn and Michelle Isam, backed by Kim Portnoy, Carol Schmidt, Willem von Hombracht and Kevin Gianino. The Oct. 23 concert music off at 7 p.m. at Moore Auditorium on campus.
