Crawling with Tarts: Ochre Land, Blue Blue Skies/Grand Surface Noise Opera Nr. 7

Crawling with Tarts è la sigla dietro la quale si celano Michael Gendreau e Suzanne Dycus; questo CD, pubblicato dalla benemerita Pogus, documenta due lavori di metà anni '90, in cui si incrociano, grazie a un accurato lavoro in studio, le vie dell’improvvisazione e dell'installazione.

Esplorando materiali concreti, oggetti meccanici, microfoni, motorini elettrici, componenti di giradischi e registratori smontati e riassemblati, i due disegnano paesaggi sonori di indubbia suggestione.

“Ochre Land, Blue Blue Skies”, evocativa fin dal titolo, è costruito su materiali bruti, dalla superficie rugosa, o, viceversa, su frequenze acute e impalpabili.

Non ci sono linee, né forme, solo distese di colore, oggetti sonori differente peso e consistenza, che si giustappongono o si succedono secondo una precisa logica ciclica, tenendo desta l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore lungo un percorso di circa 35 minuti.

“Grand Surface Noise Opera Nr. 7” ha una durata analoga al brano precedente, ma ne differisce sul piano dei contenuti, mescolando sonorità più o meno riconoscibili in maniera inusuale, come le percussioni metalliche (probabilmente un piano giocattolo) che, dopo pochi minuti, s’intrecciano al gracchiare dei corvi, deformato ai limiti del grottesco.

In questa specie di strano hörspiel molteplici voci creano una polifonia di meccaniche iterazioni, su uno sfondo in cui si affastellano sfrigolii, musiche popolari e di consumo riesumate chissà dove e come, impulsi elettronici, battiti aritmici, organetti deliranti e la percussione metallica che ritorna, follemente ossessiva, nel finale.

Per quanto anche qui il montaggio sia impeccabile e non privo di qualche momento d’interesse, il risultato dell’operazione scivola troppo spesso nell’aneddotico, rivelandosi piuttosto sfiancante.

Rimane, tuttavia, e molto forte, il desiderio di conoscere meglio questi artisti, magari tramite un'occasione "dal vivo". E questo è un buon segno.
