Joe Martin: Not by Chance
Vi si respira una notevole libertà ritmica, nel fluttuare dalla bossa di "Not By Chance" al ¾ in tempo del brano di chiusura, al fine di evitare la staticità del pendolo sonoro. Ne è un esempio emblematico la rivisitazione di un brano di Jaco Pastorius, ricca di estro improvvisativo ed atmosfere sospese.
Di buon livello pure le composizioni originali del leader, tutte dal carattere spiccato ancorché godibile. Sul piano solistico è magistrale la prova dei tre compagni di viaggio, anche se talora Potter sembra richiamarsi un po' troppo al solismo coltraniano. Un disco magnificamente suonato, dove si è evitata la ripetitiva sequenza di esposizione iniziale-variazione-ripresa finale del tema.
