Westchester Jazz Orchestra
Westchester, NY -- The Westchester Jazz Orchestra has been called a local orchestra in about the same way as, say, the New York or Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras are local.

On Saturday, November 15, this world-class big band will perform the music of the legendary pianist and composer Dave Brubeck at 8 PM at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main Street, Irvington, NY. WBGOs Gary Walker is set to host the concert.

Reserved seating is $35/$30 for seniors/ $5 for students and subscription discounts are available. Box office: 914-591-6602. WJO: 914-861-9100.

WJO is adding a new feature to this performance: a pre-concert talk. We decided to offer something extra for our patrons that will help them feel more connected both to the music and to our musicians, explains WJOs executive director, Emily Tabin. Since part of our mission is jazz education, this program fits perfectly with our goals as an organization.

The program will be aimed at the jazz novice but will also enrich long-time fans, said Mike Holober, the groups artistic director who will lead the talk. We will explore various aspects of jazz, of Dave Brubecks playing and compositions, and of course look forward to a lively Q&A. The talk is free for ticket-holders and will begin at 7:15.

A vital force on the jazz scene for close to 60 years, Dave Brubeck is a true elder statesman of jazz. The evenings concert will include selections from his best-selling album Time Out and other well-loved Brubeck compositions in newly-commissioned arrangements as well as several of Mr. Brubecks own arrangements for jazz orchestra.

WJO, described by critics as setting a standard in big band modern jazz, hugely impressive and exceptional, was propelled to national recognition recently with the release of its debut CD, All In. The CD was named on multiple Best CDs of 2007 lists, was a WBGO Top Pick from December 2007 through April 2008, and reached #4 in nationwide radio airplay. WJO will perform three additional season concerts during 2008-09: (1) Jazz Masters: The Music of Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter with special guest John Patitucci on January 31, (2) Jazz Goes to the Movies on April 18, and (3) Americana on June 6. Led by Artistic Director Mike Holober, WJO musicians include trumpeters Craig Johnson, Tony Kadleck, Jim Rotondi and Marvin Stamm; saxophonists Jay Brandford, David Brandom, Ralph Lalama, Jason Rigby and Ed Xiques; trombonists Bruce Eidem, Larry Farrell, George Flynn, and Keith OQuinn; pianist Ted Rosenthal; bassist Harvie S and drummer Andy Watson.

WJOs concerts are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Westchester Arts Council and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.

Reserved seating tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and only $5 for students. Subscription discounts are available. Order online or by telephone at the Irvington Theater box office at 914-591-6602.
