Imagine a teenage Ella Fitzgerald singing her heart out in a battle of the bands at Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. She's on Chick Webb's team, but has to give it her all to beat Benny Goodman's Orchestra and how can she really compete with Count Basie? Meanwhile, the crowd is going crazy. Over in Kat's Corner, where only the most adventurous get to dance, Frankie Manning and his 'Queen of Swing' Norma Miller are jumping over each other, performing the first ever air steps" that later become known as lindyhop. In a quieter bit, a black boy from Harlem asks a white girl from Connecticut to danceit's the 1930s and Savoy Ballroom is the only place in America he can dance with a white woman.
Outside, in the alley behind the ballroom where the lights are dimmer and the music quieter, a group of hepcats are indulging in Peppermint Candy....that's swing slang for sweets that taste so good after a reefer session, don't you know.
Fast forward to 2011 in Brighton. It's the White Mink, Black Cotton club night organized by Nick Hollywood.
