The 1881 Club in Pasadena is pleased to announce the addition of a new music series, Vocal Jazz nights, to their live jazz lineup on the first and third Saturdays of the month, beginning January 18, 2025.
The 1881 Club is Pasadena's oldest continuously running cocktail bar, established long ago when Washington Boulevard was still an unpaved dirt road. Proprietor Gail Casburn is a jazz lover who acquired the club in 2017. Casburn’s goal is to make the 1881 Club the premier jazz venue in the San Gabriel Valley.
Known for their large selection of craft cocktails and top shelf scotch and bourbons, the 1881 Club is a cozy place to gather, dance, chat, relax, and enjoy live music. Not only is 1881 a popular neighborhood destination with a great vibe, it has been presenting Jazz Nights to a packed audience every Wednesday and Friday evening. Jazz nights have brought in Grammy-winning and world class instrumentalists such as Bill Cunliffe, John Beasley, Justo Almario, Francisco Torres, Larry Koonse, Mitchel Forman, Otmaro Ruiz, Bob Sheppard and Chuck Manning, among many other A-List players.
Wednesdays are hosted by Jimmy Branly, a drummer from Havana, Cuba, who has performed with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chucho Valdez, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, and many other top names in Latin and straight-ahead jazz. The Friday sessions are curated by drummer Joel Taylor, who has performed on film soundtracks and toured and recorded with music luminaries such as Michael Bublé, Herb Alpert, and Al Di Meola.
Jazz vocalist Judy Wexler will be curating the Vocal Jazz nights, hosting some of the finest jazz vocalists in Los Angeles and beyond. She has performed at jazz festivals and leading jazz venues around the country and internationally and will be releasing her 7th album in January 2025.
Kicking off the series on January 18th is the Teryn Ré Quintet. Ré, a vocalist, arranger, and composer, will be joined on the bandstand by jazz veterans Larry Koonse (guitar), Sezin-Ahmet Turkmenoglu (bass), Rodolfo Zuniga (drums), and Josh Welchez (trumpet).
The 1881 Club is located at 1881 E. Washington Blvd. Pasadena CA 91104. Shows are 8:30pm–11:30pm with a $10 cash cover collected at the door and two drink minimum.
