Bethel Woods to Sponsor Interactive Youth Education & Jazz Performance

BETHEL, NY -- On August 4, 2007, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts will host Youth @ Jazz, a unique demonstration and interpretive “jam" session where area students will not only see and hear professional musicians, but also play with them. James Emery and the String Trio of New York will conduct a multi-faceted lecture, demonstration and discussion about their music, their origins, touring, and recording. The Liberty High School Jazz Ensemble and the Goshen Youth Jazz Band will be joined by members of the Orange County Youth Leadership Academy for this interactive program at Bethel Woods' outdoor roman-style amphitheater.

According to Darlene Fedun, vice president of development and communications at Bethel Woods, “We are delighted to present this educational program to bring artists and students together creating an unforgettable learning opportunity. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is committed to supporting the efforts of our area schools and the youth in our community."

The premier chamber jazz ensemble will perform intermittently to illustrate the many ideas being discussed and the young musicians will join the Trio in improvising over a Billie's Bounce, a 12-bar blues by Charlie Parker. Students will share the experience, challenge, depth and elation of playing with seasoned professionals while increasing the scope of their understanding of the musical process.

“Looking back to the time when I was a young person searching for my own musical identity, contact with B.B. King and Dizzy Gillespie, though brief, was incredibly important and inspiring. I hope that we can have the same impact upon the young people with whom we come into contact today," recalls celebrated performer and music educator, James Emery.

Following the dynamic presentation, the young jazz musicians will perform for those arriving on the Center's grounds and will be guests of Bethel Woods at the evening's performance featuring the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Randy Crawford & Joe Sample and Earl Klugh.

Goshen Youth Jazz Band:

Led by Ellen Dickinson, the Goshen Youth Jazz Band is an all inclusive ensemble encompassing students in grades 5-8. These young musicians perform a wide range of music such as swing, rock & roll, jazz, blues, and Motown. The Goshen Youth Jazz Band can be heard performing songs such as “My Girl" and “La Bamba" on the grounds of Bethel Woods.

Orange County Leadership Academy:

The Orange County Youth Leadership Academy serves 20 participants, who range from ages 14-18. These students benefit from a five-week summer program that exposes them to the many skills required to become a productive and fully achieved adult. This innovative program depends on the outreach and support of the community.

Liberty High School Jazz Ensemble:

Under the direction of Daniel L. McConnell, the Liberty High School Jazz Ensemble is a group of students in grades 9-12 who meet weekly to perform and practice a variety of classic jazz titles, such as “In the Mood" by Joe Garland and “Feels So Good" by Chuck Mangione. Last year the group performed at Bethel Woods and even had the chance to meet Wynton Marsalis.
