Having heard Songlines artists Gordon Grdina, Wayne Horvitz, François Houle, and Benoît Delbecq perform in venues with good room acoustics, I can attest that their Songlines recordings capture the distinctive qualities of the instruments and the positioning of the players. The Songlines ‘house sound’ is the sound of the musicians playing together in real spaces, brought to your listening room.”

ProStudioMasters is having a 40% off sale on the entire Songlines Recordings high-res catalogue through May 26. This flash sale is the first time the whole stereo catalogue (including DSD where available) has been offered at such a substantial discount.

Songlines began recording in high-res in 1999 with Junk Genius’s avant folk/jazz album Ghost of Electricity, but things got going in earnest in 2001 with SACD releases by the Misha Mengelberg Quartet (Four in One, featuring Dave Douglas, recorded live to DSD) and Wayne Horvitz’s Sweeter Than the Day (analogue mixed to DSD). Between 2001 and 2009 Songlines released 50 SACDs (nine of them native DSD and nine more mixed to DSD).

Since 2009 all the label’s releases have been 24 bit and mostly 88.2/96K or higher. Artists include Canadians (Michael Blake, Chris Gestrin, Francois Houle, Gordon Grdina, Jerry Granelli, Quinsin Nachoff, Harris Eisenstadt, Peggy Lee, Andy Milne, Amir Koushkani, Gamelan Madu Sari and many others), Americans (Bill Frisell, Ben Monder, Theo Bleckmann, Tony Malaby, Fred Hersch, Gary Peacock, Paul Motian, Robin Holcomb, Brad Shepik, Patrick Zimmerli, The Westerlies, Peter Epstein, Sean Noonan and more) and Europeans (Benoît Delbecq, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Kartet, Poolplayers, Mikkel Ploug, Joachim Badenhorst, Sissel Vera Pettersen, Hilmar Jensson, Alexander Hawkins). Styles and genres range broadly across avant jazz, chamber jazz, contemporary third stream, jazz-rock fusion, ambient jazz, contemporary world music, jazz/world fusion and even a spoken word/jazz project (Jerry Granelli and Rinde Eckert’s Sandhills Reunion).

Songlines prioritizes sound that is vivid, detailed, and coherent. According to label owner Tony Reif, “We're fostering or (re)creating an illusion, the illusion of being in the presence of the musicians as they are performing, in an ideal (upfront) seat. For that you need good equipment and flexible studios and engineers who know how to use the means at their disposal, who know what real, acoustic-electric music sounds like."

Audiophile critic Mark Werlin (HRAudio.net / All About Jazz) has this to say: “From recording to recording, the sound serves the project; it isn't imposed top-down.
