Sheet Music Apps for Your Phone

Thursday's Phone Smart column, on music-related apps, does not touch on sheet-music software for mobile devices, but here are two new services worth mentioning.

The “Ultimate Guitar Tabs" app ($3 for iPhone and iPad), gives you free tablature for tens of thousands of songs from Ultimate-Guitar.com, in a player-friendly scrolling format. The big drawback is that the tabs are submitted by users, and they are often inaccurate. Ultimate- Guitar has licensing deals with several major publishers but some music publishers say many of these tabs also represent an illegal use of their copyrighted material.

If you have an iPad, and you want official sheet music, Musicnotes.com this week released a free app, Musicnotes Sheet Music Viewer, that syncs to your device most of the sheet music you can buy on the Web site. Users can add their own notations, and although scrolling is not yet available, the company says it will introduce other features that, it claims, are better than scrolling.

There are fewer tabs to choose from than on Ultimate Guitar, and on Musicnotes they cost about $5 apiece, but at least they're all correct.
