Violinist and composer Regina Carter was presented with the ASCAP Foundation Vanguard Award in June at Frederick P. Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

“The Vanguard Award was presented to me based on my ‘innovative musical activity,” Ms. Carter says. “I have been fortunate to participate in many stylistically diverse musical settings and am attracted to music from many parts of the world. For the places and cultures I have yet to experience, the music serves as my connection.”

A MacArthur Fellowship recipient in 2006, Regina Carter will perform music from her new project, Reverse Thread, at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival on Saturday, September 5.

When asked to describe the concept behind the project she says: “Each time I make a recording I try to satisfy one of my musical cravings. There is so much interesting and beautiful music that doesn’t get played on mainstream radio that’s been introduced to me….Reverse Thread is composed of a small fraction of infectious folk melodies from the African Diaspora, both old and new. There is a Puerto Rican folk song, music of the Jews from Uganda, a piece from Madagascar and a couple of originals with the instrumentation being an accordion, electric bass, acoustic bass, drums, guitar and kora.

Ms. Carter will also perform pieces from “I’ll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey,” and “Paganini: After a Dream.” “We may even do some material that hasn’t been recorded,” she says. “I make my set lists prior to going on the bandstand as I like to get a feel for the hall during sound check. Sometimes I feel differently once I start playing or get a vibe from the audience and change tunes.”

The Regina Carter Quartet will be preceded by Nnenna Freelon, Harolyn Blackwell and Mike Garson in “Dreaming the Duke” at 8 pm.

“I performed at Tanglewood some years back playing the Fiddlers Three piece Chris Brubeck wrote for Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Eileen Ivers and me,” Ms. Carter stated. “I’m excited to be returning with my Reverse Thread project and to share the stage with the wonderful vocalist, Nnenna Freelon.”
