Luciana Souza '94 M.M. Shares Best New Age Grammy for Paul Winter Consort's Silver Solstice

Two of New England Conservatory's star jazz faculty have won Grammys in the 48th Annual Awards held Feb. 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and televised on CBS.

NEC pianist Danilo Perez, who appears along with John Patitucci, bass, and Brian Blade, drums, on the Wayne Shorter Quartet's CD, Beyond the Sound Barrier, shared the award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. Released on Verve Records, the disc is a live collection recorded during the group's widely acclaimed tours between 2002 and 2004. The songs range from new and existing Shorter compositions, pieces by other members of the band, film music and even a “third stream" arrangement of Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song. Perez recently returned from the Panama Jazz Festival, which he founded and where he and NEC students and faculty performed to international acclaim.

Visiting Artist-in-Residence Dave Holland and his 13-piece Big Band won the award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. The honored disc on the Dare2 Records label is Overtime, a collection of mostly new compositions. The album is dominated by the four-part Monterey Suite which has been built around Free For All, an independent piece (now the second movement) that has been part of the Dave Holland Quintet's repertoire for a several years.

Holland's Grammy comes just a week before the jazz bassist returns to NEC for his spring residency. On February 14 and 15, he will lead free public masterclasses at 1 p.m. in NEC's St. Botolph Hall, 241 St. Botolph St. On February 16, NEC students will perform Holland's music in a coached performance at NEC's Brown Hall, 30 Gainsborough St. The residency is sponsored by bassist and NEC Board of Visitors member Jimmy Earl '81.

In other NEC Grammy news, jazz singer Luciana Souza '94 M.M. was among the musicians teaming up with the Paul Winter Consort for Silver Solstice (Living Music), the Best New Age Album. With an all-star cast featuring the Pokrovsky Ensemble, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, and Oscar Castro Neves, the performance documents the 25th anniversary of the Consort's annual Winter Solstice concert at New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
