The Uptown Lounge at Minton's Playhouse, Minton's Mentors Foundation, and the World Series of Stickball, Inc. host the second annual Minton's Playhouse Hall of Fame Induction and Stickball Classic with a full day of events on Sunday, August 10, 2008. This year, legendary figures Henry Minton, Teddy Hill, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and John Birks Gillespie will be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and the esteemed vocalist and drummer Grady Tate receives a Lifetime Achievement in Jazz award.
The day's activities commence at 10:00 a.m. with a stickball game on St. Nicholas Avenue between 117th and 118th streets; at noon, jazz musicians of Harlem, both old and young, gather for a community photo shoot outside Minton's Playhouse under its historic marquee. Music begins inside the club at 2:00 p.m., with a performance by The Blue Notes, students of the York College Youth Jazz big band, aged 14-17. The induction ceremony will close the day's events at 3:00 p.m.
Minton's Playhouse is located at 208 West 118th Street between St. Nicholas Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. Musicians interested in participating in the community photo shoot may contact Rose Petal Productions at 347-291-4328 or at [email protected].
Minton's Mentors Foundation is dedicated to educating and supporting our youth and the Harlem community by building awareness of the history and significance of jazz. The organization's outreach initiatives include a jazz camp, family-oriented jazz programming, lectures by jazz educators and journalists, and an Artistic Residency post held by Onaje Allan Gumbs.
