Wednesday June 21, July 26 and August 16, 2006 at 6 PM
John Scofield, renowned jazz guitarist and Katonah resident, inaugurates an exciting three-part Shades of Jazz series that will be held in the Katonah Museum of Art's Sculpture Garden this summer. Each evening will feature performances by first-rate, engaging musicians selected by Scofield who will be on hand to host and sit in with each of the artists whom he describes as accessible but edgy."
Guest artists include:
Vocalist Rebecca Martin
Vocalist Gretchen Parlato
Harpist Edmar Castaeda
Shades of Jazz kicks off on Wednesday, June 21 with balladeer Rebecca Martin, whose collection of standards was selected by The New York Times for its annual Top Ten Best Jazz Albums of 2002. Times music critic Ben Ratliff praised Martin as a fresh jazz singer set loose in folk-pop, or vice versa; you never quite know which ... and both sides of the equation come out well ... her soprano voice recalls the range Joni Mitchell had in her younger years."
On July 26 Shades of Jazz, will feature vocalist Gretchen Parlato. The 2004 winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition, Parlato has been praised by Herbie Hancock for her deep, almost magical connection to the music. Every note is expressive, powerful, and pretty."
The series concludes on August 16 with Colombian jazz harpist Edmar Castaeda. Called phenomenal" and technically astounding" by Jazz Times, Castaneda combines Latin jazz with traditional Columbian music. Performing since he was thirteen, Castaneda is a jazz harpist of imposing talent," according to the New York Times.
Shades of Jazz is sponsored, in part, by Blue Note Jazz Club, with support from Willy Nick's Restaurant & Bar. Complimentary beer supplied by Westchester's own Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. Wine provided by Teatown Cellars, a locally-owned California wine producer featuring Napa Valley Merlot.
