Homage to the legendary Kansas City singer and “king of blues & rock 'n' roll Big Joe Turner by soul-jazz stars Bernard Pretty Purdie, Reuben Wilson & friends; tributes, one hundred years from their birth, to swing icons Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa; concerts devoted to legendary New Orleans guitarist and vocalist Danny Barker; numerous classical jazz greats such as Chris Barber (for the first time in Ascona!), Scott Hamilton, and Johnny Varro, and—of course—some of the best New Orleans-style bands; as well as a record number of jazz vocalists, including stars such as Freddy Cole, Kevin Mahogany, Niki Haris, Pink Turtle (#1 selling jazz band in France), and the phenomenal Gegè Telesforo. A cappella legends and winners of ten Grammy Awards, TAKE 6 will also be at JazzAscona 2009. Descendents of the rich gospel and doo-wop tradition of the 1950s and a group that influenced the jazz and pop scene over the past 20 years, TAKE 6 will perform in Ascona on Wednesday, July 1, in Piazza Torre. During this special concert—sponsored by the Municipality of Ascona to celebrate the festival's 25th anniversary—the group will present Standards, their most recent project and a tribute to the great jazz classics.
