Starting Tuesday, Fort Collins is offering six days dedicated to experiencing the music in a variety of ways, with outdoor shows, indoor gigs, films and more.
On Thursday, the New Belgium Brewing Co.'s Bike-In Movie Night is showing Jazz on a Summer's Day, the captivating film of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, at 8 p.m. (500 Linden St., 970-221-0524).
That same evening, guitarist Charlie Hunter brings his trio to the town's Aggie Theater (970-482-8300). Hunter's current CD, Mistico, displays his ability to blend strong grooves with adventurous twists. Erik Deutsch, the keyboardist in Hunter's latest trio, spent a number of years in the metro area; drummer Tony Mason rounds out the band. On July 11 and 12, Hunter continues his Colorado tour at the Boulder Theater (303-786-7030) and the Bluebird Theater (303-377-1666), respectively.
Also on Thursday, John Magnie of the Subdudes will celebrate a Birthplace of Jazz party with New Orleans sounds and a crawfish boil, from 6 p.m. to midnight in Avogadro's, 605 S. Mason St. (970-493- 5555).
Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and his Lincoln Center Orchestra will perform July 12 in the town's Lincoln Center (970-221-6733).
While Marsalis is in Fort Collins with a big band, his new CD, Two Men with the Blues, a live performance with Willie Nelson, is everywhere. In the summer of 1981, I caught Miles Davis at a club called Kix in Boston. There had been talk of Davis recording with Nelson, and the trumpeter was wearing a Nelson baseball cap. That never happened, but this solid date with Marsalis reminds me of what might have been back then.
