Steve Beckman, Head of Content Partnerships at FilmBuff noted “rarely do we have an opportunity to support a film series that helps to fully explore a global artistic movement" adding “we feel that making the series available digitally will further promote the surging interest in 21st century improvised music, which Angel City Jazz Festival and The Jazz Bakery are continuously presenting to Los Angeles audiences."

The four-part series documentary, part of a trans-media platform which includes a feature film version and a digital archive, explores contemporary jazz luminaries including Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Wayne Shorter, Robert Glasper, Jason Moran, Greg Osby, Anat Cohen, Dafnis Prieto and Terence Blanchard. The series is a branded entertainment partnership between DonQ Rum, Rums of Puerto Rico and Paradigm Studio.

The Los Angeles Times called the series “provocative" and NPR Music says “[Icons] depicts jazz as a living, breathing and ever-evolving musical art form, and above all, exposes more people to some of the best jazz artists around today." The series originally aired on the Documentary Channel in North America and released on DVD by IndiePix Films. It has been hailed by All About Jazz as “without a doubt the best series on jazz thatʼs ever been produced." Executive Producer John W. Comerford and co-directors Michael Rivoira, Lars Larson, Peter J. Vogt and story/film editor Kristian Hill fashioned Icons Among Us from seven years of interviews with over 75 living jazz artists in high definition and over 24 hours of live performances recorded on super sixteen millimeter film in popular venues across the U.S. and Europe.

Also, slated for the Angel City Jazz Festivalʼs activities is a preview of the Icons Among Us Digital Archive at an Angel City Jazz Technology Symposium at REDCAT Theater on Friday October 11th. The on-line archive is powered by Drupal Squad who provide expert, on-demand Drupal maintenance and development. The site is curated by co-producer B Dahlia and enables access to selected underlying interviews & full-length performances from the series. Paradigm Studio, in partnership with the Argus Fund, is developing the portal that provides free public access to content and a future membership based educational platform.

This platform will feature rich meta-data (including interview transcripts, performance data and advanced search options) with access to hi-resolution images/sound and opportunities for licensing to create customized lesson plans. Paradigm Studio is also working to continue acquisition of up-and-coming artists that were not included in principal photography. Their interviews and music performances will be added to the archive on a rolling basis beginning with a showcase at the 2013 Earshot Jazz Festival featuring NEXT Collective.
