Clinic: Writing for the Jazz Education Journal. The Jazz Education Journal is looking for prospective authors to submit high-quality manuscripts for potential publications. The first half of the session covers author guidelines, potential article topics, and the JEJ review process. The second half of the session provides the opportunity for authors to meet one-on-one with the JEJ Editor in order to discuss specific manuscript ideas and to provide feedback on first drafts. Clinic: New Ways of Brazilian Drumming. This clinic presents a complete vision of the development of samba, baiao, and maracatu, applied to the drum set from the traditional Brazilian drumming until today, It also includes percussion instruments and the new concept of Brazilian claves. Technology Track: Jazz Arranging Using Virtual Instruments. An overview of jazz and big band arranging using virtual instruments, i.e. the Garritan Jazz and Big Band software instruments. The use of virtual instruments in notation programs, such as Finale and Sibelius, will be covered as well as various sequencers. The new interactive text Jazz Arranging Using Garritan Jazz and Big Band will be demonstrated with multimedia flash examples. Clinicians: Chuck Isreals, John Kuzmich. Technology Track: Current Trends in Music Technology Labs. Today's laptop and desktop computers operate at such terrific speeds that expensive dedicated hardware is quickly being replaced by software and affordable USB controller keyboards. This trend is especially important to music educators looking to provide relevant, technology based music experiences to their students within their budget constraints. This session highlights successful music programs that are built on this model and demonstrates some of the equipment, software, and curriculum materials in use. Clinician: Bobbie Thornton. Workshop: Who Asked You, Anyway? Day 3. A hands-on clinic taught over three days (one hour per day), presented by the JJA, about how to write a good jazz review - for print media or radio. Industry Track: A Salute to Basie. Sponsored by JazzTimes William Basie took the swinging music of the territory bands and mixed it with Kansas City blues to produce some of the most distinctive jazz of the Twentieth Century. Clinic: Moving with the Spirit: Sacred Jazz of Mary Lou Williams. In the 1960s, pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams actively composed jazz works that were specifically meant to be used in church services. This clinic will present musical excerpts of Williams' sacred works as played by the Deanna Witkowski Trio featuring Pat Collins (bass) and Joel Haynes (drums) with naration by Dr. Tammy Kernodle. Clinic: Teaching Traditional Jazz/Dixieland Improvisation. An approach to teaching traditional jazz improvisation that is based on the style of cornetist, Bobby Hackett. Through a logical progression of steps, students embellish melodies using acquired formal and harmonic understanding, resulting in improvised solos that sound authentic. Clinician: Steve Call. Clinic: Art Tatum Plays Again! Zenph Studios is a software company building the technology to understand--and recreate--exactly how musicians play. Its first jazz release is a new recording of the Art Tatum album Piano Starts Here. Sony BMG recorded it live in LA's Shrine Auditorium in 2007, using the finest recording engineers, technicians, and producer - creating a disc with versions tailored for headphone listening, surround-sound, and traditional stereo. Imagine sitting in the room and hearing Art Tatum play in person. You're not listening through speakers, but feeling the visceral impact of every note as it's played by Tatum on a marvelous concert grand. Technology Track: Harnessing the Power of the Web in the Music Classroom and Rehearsal Room. This session looks at how Internet tools such as podcasts, blogs, wikis, and MySpace, can potentially change the way music teachers teach and students learn. Easy to use, low cost Web publishing and information gathering tools have the potential to transform our music teaching in the classroom. Clinician: Stefani Langol.
