Clinic: The Percussionist in a Jazz Context. This clinic will help percussionists achieve better interplay within a jazz context. Clinic: The Masters under the Microscope, what we can learn about singing from a generation of jazz vocal legends. Using (1) a family of Windows software programs, (2) recordings of Ernestine Anderson, Mark Murphy, Betty Carter, Bobby McFerrin, Johnny Hartman, Carmen McRae, and live vocal performers, we will actually see how vibrato, legato, vowel production , text treatment and degrees of resonance are executed. Spectrographic analysis can help us understand what jazz vocal artists actually do physically and acoustically when they sing. Clinician: Diana Spradling. Clinic: Sax and Rhythm. Billboard chart-topping saxophonist, Frank Catalano discusses and demonstrates how great saxophonists have used the rhythm section to develop their improvised solos. Famous duos, trios, quartets, quintets and sextets led by saxophonists John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins will be discussed. Clinician: Frank Catalano. Technology Track: Digital Audio Recording Concepts. This session is geared towards educators who have had minimal recording experience but would like to learn to record and edit audio. The first portion of the clinic will focus on the selection and purchase of equipment including microphones, audio interface, console, and software. The second portion of the clinic will be devoted to digital audio editing and mixing techniques. Although the clinician will use Logic Pro to demonstrate editing and mixing concepts, the techniques can be easily applied to Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software from any vendor. How can a sequencer be used to emulate the idiosyncratic characteristics of human performance and the natural behavior of acoustic instruments? This presentation will discuss tips and techniques for using automation and continuous controllers to mimic phrase shaping, dynamics, bowing, and other aspects of human musical performance.
