Summer Jazz Series at the Louis Armstrong House Museum

Free outdoor concert series highlights rising musical stars; Three Sundays: June 22, July 20, August 24

FLUSHING, NY, June 2, 2008 -- Outstanding young bands will play old-time standards in Hot Jazz/Cool Garden, a free concert series launched this summer by the Louis Armstrong House Museum. Made for the shade, the programs will take place in the museum's Japanese garden on Sunday, June 22, July 20 and August 24, from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Hot Jazz/Cool Garden was created to showcase new bands that specialize in traditional jazz. This year's schedule features the Walker Street Orphans on June 22, the Red Hook Ramblers on July 20, and the Lounge Leader on August 24. During their performances, Louis Armstrong House will remain open for tours at the discount price of $5 a person.

It is only natural for jazz musicians to play in the home of the legendary Satchmo, who moved to Corona, Queens, with his wife Lucille in 1943. The couple spent the rest of their lives in this house. Now their residence--still containing its original furnishings--is a National Historic Landmark administered by Queens College. The tour explores the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong and includes spoken word recordings of him enjoying a meal with Lucille at his dining room table, chatting with friends in his living room, or practicing the trumpet in his den.

The Walker Street Orphans, Sunday, June 22nd

The Walker Street Orphans enjoy playing Dixieland/Traditional/Society/Hot Jazz, with a peppering of other genres. This band strives to keep a rich musical tradition alive while giving it a modern twist. Sound samples and pictures are available at MySpace.

The Red Hook Ramblers, Sunday, July 20th

The Red Hook Ramblers are dedicated to the preservation of America's rich early music, from ragtime to marches to blues to jazz and more. Their specialty is exploring hot jazz of the '20s, especially the New Orleans and Chicago styles. Sound clips are available at MySpace.

The Lounge Leader, Sunday, August 24

The Lounge Leader performs the great American songbook with flair and panache. Featuring a vocalist and vibraphonist complimented by upright bass, drums, and trumpet, this group has a sound that evokes the New York City of 40 years ago, when melody was king and elegance was the order of the night.
