BOSTON, June 14, 2002 - Berklee College of Music's annual summer programs kick off this week, providing instruction on a wide range of musical topics, from jazz trombone performance to Afro-Cuban percussion to record contract negotiation. The programs are offered to musicians of all abilities, and range in length from one weekend to five weeks.
Berklee's summer programs are taught by members of the college faculty, and, in some cases, special guest instructors, such as percussionist Horacio El Negro" Hernandez and violinist Darol Anger. Many also feature clinics and performances by visiting artists. Past clinicians have included blues musician Susan Tedeschi, bassist Christian McBride, guitarists John Abercrombie and Mark Whitfield, and singer/songwriters Patty Larkin and Marshall Crenshaw.

Music Business: Recording Industry and E-Commerce, June 14-15
This workshop will cover business, legal, and taxation issues affecting record companies, music products, music publishing, talent management, and concert promotion. Web site design and construction also will be covered.
Saxophone Weekend, June 21-23
Berklee's woodwind faculty will help students explore all aspects of sax playing, including phrasing, stylistic considerations, developing solos, and building harmonic vocabulary.
Brass Weekend, June 21-23
Students will learn brass instrumental techniques, gain practice in reading contemporary music, improve ensemble playing abilities, and develop improvisational skills.
World Percussion Festival, June 24-29
The festival will provide instruction in a wide range of global rhythms, for both hand percussionists and drum set players. The styles to be covered include Latin, African, Indian, jazz, funk, fusion, and rock drumming.
Mallet Keyboard Festival, June 26-29
Participants will learn mallet keyboard craft, improvisation, effects, sound, and performance skills on marimba, vibraphone, or orchestral mallets.
Bass Lines, June 27-29
Berklee's bass faculty will provide instruction through labs, group lessons, master classes, and ensemble playing. A range of styles will be covered, including jazz, blues, rock, funk, and Latin.
Performance Program, July 6-Aug. 9
This five-week program will offer intensive instruction in performance, through private lessons, instrumental labs, ensembles, and theory courses. Students also will have the opportunity to participate in informal jam sessions and to perform in front of their peers and instructors.
Music Production Workshop, July 12-14
A series of intensive workshops will be offered on a variety of music production topics, such as synthesizer programming, multitrack recording, desktop digital audio.
Berklee in L.A., July 21-27
Berklee faculty will travel to Los Angeles for a week of instruction in instrumental and voice performance workshops. Coursework will cover ensemble performance, music theory, improvisation, and study methods.
String Fling, July 25-27
Violin, viola, and cello players will cultivate improvisational skills in contemporary idioms such as blues, country, jazz, and rock. Berklee
