The Music Department at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth announces the following dates for auditions of prospective students of all instruments and voice: Thursday, February 3, 2005, 5 PM, Friday, Feburay 4, 5 PM, Saturday February 6, 10 am, Saturday, February 26, 10 am, Saturday, March 5, 10 am. In special cases, additional appointments will be made available. The auditions will be held at the UMass Dartmouth campus, 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747, Building Group VI.
Applications by mail are also available, if the travel time/distance proves to be prohibitive.
The music program at UMass Dartmouth is unique in its broad spectrum of music under one roof. Whether the future Music Educator and Performer/Composer concentrates on classical music or jazz/world music or new/electronic music, this exposure and understanding of many kinds of music and their common ground provides an invaluable professional advantage.
The new Music Department head Karl Berger brings to the program the vision that he pioneered at the legendary Creative Music Studio, which has inspired thousands of musicians from around the world (see www.CreativeMusicStudio.org). It includes explorations into the elements of sound and music and a unique system of rhythmic-dynamic training; learning by doing" in acoustic and electronic labs, workshops, ensembles, performances and recordings; a personalized approach to each student's interests and talents; a broad exposure to, and experience of the world's musical traditions through residencies with leading composers/performers.
The resident faculty of artists include the world-renown bassist/guitarist/composer Santi Debriano, the world-musical drummer/percussionist royal hartigan, the award-winning composer and electronic wizard Ken Ueno, and more than thirty part-time lecturers, instrumentalists, vocalists, composers and educators including John Harrison, Marcelle Gauvin, Annette Betanski, Jamie Eckert, Andy McWain, Rick Britto, Timothy Melbinger, Steve Kirby, Wayman Chin, Rieko Tanaka, Will Riley, Marie Nelson, and Paul Ciennawa. Visiting artists representing many world cultures from India, Indonesia, Africa, South America are regulars at UMass Dartmouth. Internationally active jazz and classical soloists and composers offer workshops and performances at UMass Dartmouth.
Presently leading to a BA in music, the department will offer a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) within a year. Other graduate programs are in preparation. A Certificate for Private Teaching is a new feature of the program starting in Fall 2005. This Certificate will also be available to professional musicians that are not full-time students.
