The University of the Arts School of Performing Arts, in cooperation with All About Jazz, is proud to honor the Philadelphia jazz legacy and musicians with a new project to document the history of jazz in the region from the inception to the present time. With such luminaries as Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Charlie Ventura, John Coltrane, Pat Martino, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Mickey Roker, Christian McBride, Nina Simone, and Kenny Barron who came up in this area (the list is endless) as well as local working musicians, teachers, nightclubs, and performance venues, Philadelphia has made a tremendous contribution to the evolution of jazz.

The Project begins with a search to accumulate information, documents, and recordings pertinent to jazz in Philadelphia and vicinity. In the future, it is hoped that symposia, webpages, publications, and a center devoted to project exhibits will bring this information and awareness to the listening public. It is also hoped that other cities will follow suit to increase awareness of jazz history in their region.

The coordinators of the Project are Rick Lawn, Dean of the College of Performing Arts at UArts, Michael Ricci, publisher of All About Jazz, and Vic Schermer, contributing editor for All About Jazz.

Many of you in the region or elsewhere have participated in or witnessed jazz here. To begin with, you can help by contacting us with the names of musicians, events, and venues that might slip through the cracks. In addition, you can let us know of any documents and web resources which might help in the research part of the Project. You can also let us know how you might want to become involved as a volunteer in our efforts.

To do so, please email Vic Schermer to introduce yourself and provide us with any details. (Please note that in providing such information, you are agreeing to make it public. You can indicate whether or not you wish your name to be included as a source.)

In the near future, All About Jazz will provide a “History of Philadelphia Jazz Time Line," an information resource and a forum through which readers can conveniently become involved in the dialogue.

We will have more news to share about this exciting new project soon.

If you would like to be involved in any capacity, please contact us at your earliest convenience.

You can forward this announcement to a Philly Jazz friend by clicking the “email" icon on this page.
