Christoph Irniger and Marc Perrenoud: New Lines

Christoph Irniger and Marc Perrenoud rank among the most thoughtful voices in Switzerland's contemporary jazz scene. Irniger, trained at the Zurich University of the Arts and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, is best known as leader of the ensemble Pilgrim. Perrenoud, raised in Switzerland, studied at the Geneva Conservatory and the Lausanne jazz school. Although they had known each other for years, the two only began performing together as a duo in 2022—proof, perhaps, that the best musical partnerships are worth the wait.

The album combines original compositions with melodic lines laid over the harmonic frameworks of these original compositions. Stripped of bass and drums, the duo format places full responsibility for rhythm, harmony, and forward propulsion on saxophone and piano alone. "Bluesetto" carries an almost weightless pulse, Perrenoud's left hand quietly implying time as Irniger floats gossamer lines above it—the jazz equivalent of a knowing shrug. "Fast Finish" delivers tightly coiled bop energy, a brief shot of espresso that demonstrates how much swing can be generated through surgical interplay rather than sheer volume. "Luce Oscura" darkens the palette with brooding piano voicings and a plaintive, vocal quality in Irniger's playing. On "Hold Up," the duo breezes through dizzying unison passages with the easy confidence of two musicians who clearly know where the exits are. "Gizmo" showcases Irniger's feathery touch set against Perrenoud's tense, angular chords.
