Francesco Diodati Neko: Need Something Strong

Enrico Rava scrive nelle note di copertina di Need Something Strong: "Francesco Diodati è senz'altro uno dei solisti più interessanti e appassionati della scena attuale, ma non ne conoscevo le doti di compositore e di leader. Doti che in questo disco letteralmente esplodono." Un bel viatico per il giovane chitarrista compositore romano qui alla seconda prova discografica con i suoi Neko, un quartetto ben combinato e affiatato dove spicca l'efficace Francesco Bigoni al tenore. D'altronde Rava ha proprio ragione: Diodati, dopo la bella prova di Purple Bra, infioretta un altro bouquet di sofisticate vibrazioni elettroacustiche a cavallo tra jazz, elettronica, minimalismo e post-psichedelia.

Una musica senza fronzoli e scarna, spesso dominata dal sax rauco di Bigoni, che però cela tesori nascosti ricchi di sfumature, distorsioni e accordi scaturiti come d'incanto dalla magica sei corde di Diodati. Succede, ad esempio, nella circolare e ipnotizzante "Loop Bed," ma l'incantesimo si ripete anche nella densa e crepuscolare "October". Due tracce che danno la dimensione della maturità raggiunta da Diodati come compositore ormai in grado di proporsi alla ribalta della scena jazz internazionale con un sound, un timbro e uno stile assolutamente originali. Il che, visti i tempi, è già un ottimo risultato.
