Tony Jones - Saxophone

Tenor saxophonist Tony Jones has performed, recorded and composed for the Jessica Jones Quartet for 25 years, and collaborated with Peter Apfelbaum in musical groups since they were fourteen years old, including the seminal Berkeley Free Jazz Unit, the Hieroglyphics Ensemble, the Peter Apfelbaum Sextet and the New York Hieroglyphics Ensemble. In addition, Tony has worked with Joseph Jarman, Muhal Richard Abrams, Cecil Taylor, Idris Ackamoor, and Don Cherry playing jazz festivals on the east and west coasts as well as in Germany and France.

As an art form, free jazz is often associated with honking, screaming, fiercely extroverted solos. But in the hands of tenor saxophonist Tony Jones, free improvisation can also explore introspective inner spaces. On his beatific new recording Pitch, Rhythm and Consciousness, his music murmurs, croons, chants and sighs, sustaining a becalmed but intensely alert mood from beginning to end. Featuring master drummer Kenny Wollesen and exploratory violinist Charles Burnham, the project brings together three long-time comrades. In many ways, the unusual instrumentation gave birth to the album, as Wollesen steps away from the trap set to create resonant textures with a collection of bells that inspired these captivating soundscapes. The music unfolds as a series of aural investigations, as Jones and Burnham leave plenty of space for the metallic notes to ring and fade. The resulting music - patient, intimate and unmistakably jazzcentric - is unlike anything else in recent memory.

Pitch, Rhythm and Consciousness: Sextet

Read "Sextet" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Pitch, Rhythm and Consciousness: Sextet

Read "Sextet" reviewed by Thierry De Clemensat

Pitch, Rhythm and Consciousness is a collective of musicians who stand among the most representative of the New York jazz scene in 2025. Initially formed as a quartet, the group was founded by Tony Jones and Charlie Burnham, two of the most captivating artists of the ensemble, who are later joined by Kenny Wollesen, Marika Hughes, Jessica Jones and Rashaan Carter. Given the group's initial configuration, it is evident that their music and compositions are not meant for ...

Jessica Jones Quartet: Edible Flowers

Read "Edible Flowers" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

The Jessica Jones Quartet's Edible Flowers can be described as a pair of hot tenor saxophonists cranking things up and shouting out one freewheeling romp (or rant) after another. There is a structure to her tunes, but the improvisation slice of the pie is a big one. Saxophonist Jones is joined by her sax mate, Tony Jones, bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Deszon Claiborne in this “no chording instrument quartet." The group is reminiscent of Ornette Coleman's band of New ...

Tony Jones: Pitch, Rhythm, and Consciousness

Read "Pitch, Rhythm, and Consciousness" reviewed by Matt Marshall

On this ruminative record--and, indeed, it is a record, released primarily on vinyl, with MP3 downloads available--saxophonist Tony Jones, violinist Charles Burnham and percussionist Kenny Wollesen show themselves wholly comfortable within the quiet sonic space about them. Jones is the lead voice--the lead traveler, as it were--working his way across a terrain that is at once wide open and timeless, and newly created by the musicians themselves. The opener, “Dear Toy," one of two tunes on the ...
