In addition to performing with his own trio or solo, Kauflin has worked with The Clark Terry Quintet, The Clayton Brothers Quintet, Katie Thiroux Trio, Brian McCarthy Nonet, Songevity, Jae Sinnett Trio, multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier, duo pianos with John Toomey, Jeremy Siskind, Gerald Clayton, Robi Botos, Alfredo Rodriguez, bassists Thomas Fonnesbaek, Derrick Hodge, Chris Funn, Dave Robaire, Chris Smith, Evan Gregor, Phil Kuehn, Michael Hawkins, Mike Downes, Rob Duguay, Matt Hall, Jimmy Masters, Chris Brydge, saxophonists Roxy Coss, Tim Green, Stantawn Kendrick, Steve Wilson, Brian McCarthy, James 'Saxsmo' Gates, Ken Peplowski, Eddie Williams, Jeff Smith, guitarists Chico Pinheiro, Matt Stevens, Alan Parker, Ulf Wakenius, Etan Haziza, drummers Jimmy MacBride, Billy Williams, Corey Fonville, Christian Euman, Mark Ferber, Cornelia Nilsson, Jim Doxas, Al Hicks, Nadav Snir-Zelniker, and vocalists Sahra Da Silva, Paul Marinaro, Liz Brydge, Sheila Jordan, Rene Marie, Christie Dashiell.
During the pandemic, he shifted his focus to sound design and film scoring, composing original soundtracks for several impactful documentaries including Reflection: A Walk with Water with multi-Grammy winner, Jacob Collier, My Sister Liv, the trailer for Quincy Jones' book 12 Notes on Life and Creativity and Nespresso ads. He contributed to the Nickelodeon movie Blue's Big City Adventure and the documentary Full Circle scored by Emmy-nominated Mark Crawford (The Social Dilemma). Justin is featured in, as well as composed the film score for, the Academy Award short-listed documentary, Keep On Keepin' On, which honors his mentor, the late legendary jazz trumpet/flugelhorn player, Clark Terry, directed and produced by the award-winning team of Alan Hicks, Paula Dupre Pesman, and Quincy Jones.
During the pandemic, Justin adapted by hosting live-streamed concerts and "Hangs." JK's Wednesday Night Hang featured music from his favorite artists and included occasional live interviews with talents like Derrick Hodge and Celine Peterson. Sunday Hymns & Things provided a space for reflection and prayer, where he played cherished hymns along with improvised meditations. The Christmas/Advent Hangs encompassed a month of Christmas/Advent Hymns culminating in marathon playing on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day to offer background music and reconnect with old friends, while JK's Playground highlights his passion for Virtual Studio Technology.

New world modernization meets old world ideals at Sam First jazz club in Los Angeles. In just a few short years Sam First has built a solid reputation with both jazz artists and aficionados. Among its many qualities are the acoustics. In 2019, Peter Erskine, George Garzone, Alan Pasqua, and Darek Oles recorded their brilliant 3 Nights in L.A. at Sam First. At that point it was clear they had something special going on at Sam First. Starting up Sam ...

Whether the title of this album, the performing group's name, or its leader's surname have additional meaning is positively irrelevant because this performance is a winner. It is a bassist-led trio album offering engaging sonic textures which spin and entice throughout. The title cut sends things into up-tempo action with Justin Kauflin's keyboard sounding the call. Highly rhythmic and intense, the energies build as the trio exhibits a superb interplay of ideas. Lorac Waltz" gives us a ...

by Chris Mosey
Young US pianist Justin Kauflin and Danish bassist Thomas Fonnesbaek share the neurological condition known as synesthesia, in which the senses become mixed. For the two musicians, this means experiencing sounds as colors with their minds' eyes. They met in Copenhagen for the first time in 2015. Fonnesbaek recalls, Besides being a meeting between Justin and myself, it was a meeting of cultures with many similarities and many inspiring differences that we could express through sound in ...

The beauty of music lies in its subliminal spirituality. Religious or not, few can argue the effects of music on the human emotions and how it impacts our perception of things beyond what is skin-deep. For 24 year-old Justin Kauflin, a New York-based pianist notable for his work with Jae Sinnett, and for his freshman release of Introducing Justin Kauflin (Self Produced, 2010), the interconnection of music and faith is not only a sure conversation-starter, but also ...
