Fabian Arends

Fabian Arends is a Jazz Drummer and Composer living in Cologne/Germany. He is an active part of the Jazz- and improvised music scene in Cologne.

He has worked with musicians such as Lee Konitz, Marc Copland, Simon Nabatov, John Goldsby, John Ruocco, Jacob Anderskov, Hayden Chisholm, Hubert Nuss, Florian Ross, Ingmar Heller, Niels Klein, Nicolas Thys, Jason Seizer, Thomas Rückert, Robert Landfermann, Pablo Held, Jürgen Friedrich, Gerd Dudek, Dieter Manderscheid, Sebastian Sternal a.o.

Concerts and festivals including such as Audi Jazz Festival Cologne, Jazzfest Bonn, JazzBaltica, ElbJazz Hamburg, Moers Jazzfestival, Leverkusener Jazztage, Jazzrallye Düsseldorf, Intern. Literatur – und Poesiefest Bad Homburg, BR Radio Jazzfestival, 8Brücken Festival Cologne, Transeuropéennes Rouen or Saint-Louis Jazzfestival.

In 2016 he released his first recording as a leader with the collective group ´last chance dance´. With ´Levitate´ he releases his first recording under his name in January 2017. The repertoire consists mostly of his compositions, the band includes saxophonist Wanja Slavin, pianist Simon Seidl and David Helm on bass.

Since 2016 Fabian Arends is teaching Jazz-Drums at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart.

Writing about music has been compared to dancing about architecture, in that it is a supposedly useless task. Writing music about architecture is a worthwhile proposition, though, as shown by this release from German pianist Florian Ross, composing music for his quartet and the Event Wind Ensemble which is inspired by famous architects and buildings he has encountered in his travels. Midsummer 2019 was quite a busy time for Florian Ross. Apparently, the German-born pianist recorded the quartet date Reason & Temptation from June 29-July 2, then returned the following day to the same studio in Koln and added a wind ensemble to record Architexture for another label (Naxos).
