Matteo Alfonso, Giovanni Maier: Mingus Revisited
Le belle e celebri melodie dei temi mingusiani vengono così ripercorse con uno schietto duetto tra i due strumenti, con il pianoforte che incede sulle note medio alte lasciando al contrabbasso l'universo più oscuro, che si trasforma in dialogo nelle improvvisazioni, spesso condotte in coppiasplendide quelle di "Nouroog," con Maier all'archetto, e "Celia," dove i due scherzano ritmicamente cambiando scenario e altre volte invece lasciate alla creatività e alla maestria strumentale di ciascun artista.
Qui Alfonso offre sofisticate scelte sulla tastiera e belle variazioni armoniche per esempio le prime in "Nouroog," le seconde in "East Coasting" e "Celia" mentre Maier si esibisce in numerose delle sue apprezzatissime prolusioni cantabili, come in "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love," "Free Cell Block F, 'tis Nazi U.S.A." o "Orange Was the Color of Her Dress, Then Blue Silk," quest'ultima, splendida, prima all'archetto e poi al pizzicato, è uno dei momenti più alti dell'album.
Il lavoro si conclude con "Eclipse" che, dopo un'introduzione astratta e rumoristica in cui Alfonso lavora sulle corde, termina il disco con una narrazione malinconica nella quale l'interazione tra tastiera e contrabbasso stupisce per perfezione formale e risultato artistico.
Un album apparentemente semplice, per scelta del materiale e modalità interpretativa, ma che è al contrario estremamente denso all'ascolto, grazie alla molteplicità degli stilemi usati e all'accuratezza della realizzazione.
