About the Album

One of the most audacious but rewarding large-ensemble projects of the year so far is “GARGANTUA,” a genre-free epic by composer/arranger Simon Hanes, featuring a large ensemble consisting of three drum sets, three electric basses, three trombones, three french horns, and three voices. Inspired by 16th-century novelist François Rabelais, the album was produced by David Breskin. An example of the barely-controlled creative chaos Hanes can produce is “Number of the Beast is 666,” a delightfully unhinged concoction that sounds like a renaissance dance gone wonderfully awry.
