'Smile,' Said the Drum (for Elvin)

About the Album

Recorded on January 11, 2005. When trailblazing (yet by that time, ailing) drummer Elvin Jones was making his last engagement in 2004, we heard that he was performing solos long after the band and patrons had gone...he wanted to go out playing. We (Jim Ridl, piano/composer; Ron Kerber, soprano sax; J.D. Walter, vocals; Steve Varner, bass; and Jim Miller, drums) wanted to tell the story of Elvin never wanting to stop making music through this arrangement.
