About the Album
The inimitable and prolific pianist, composer and bandleader Satoko Fujii leads orchestras all over the world. Second Attempt features her Orchestra Berlin in a five-part piece designed to maximize creativity and freedom of expression. “I always think about how I can have freedom as a composer and freedom for my collaborators to add their voices,” she says. “All we need are a few simple rules so everyone can work together.” Fujii is a bold and brilliant experimenter, and in this piece she tries out a new method of composing that involves building the piece from small parts, as well as using novel objects like newspaper to make music. “Part 2” showcases percussionists Michael Griener and Peter Orins providing an improvised thread over which the band interjects short phrases, leading to an exciting improvised climax.
