About the Album

With phrases from Arundhati Roy’s 'War Talk,' this tune is a panoptic assessment of our current planetary peril, from the absurdities of late-stage capitalism to the existential piquancy of climate collapse: ‘sea monster sucks its syrup / from the earth’s harpooned marrow / the river of dinosaurs / and the debts we flee.’ Chronicling the damage and the stakes, there is also the question of what the Artist is to do in such a world: ‘it’s a long call / from the Radio Ocean / I want an honest bargain / for the sea / mendacity in the coils of each communication / turn your phone off / and talk to me.’ There’s also a coy wink to the film producer Christine Vachon, all amid an alternating odd meter (15/8 on the verse, 7/8 on the chorus and bridge), and a swinging sax solo by Grace Kelly. The song is the title track from Judet-Weinshel's second collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Scott Healy ("Koko On The Boulevard"). A sprawling and raucous affair, over a decade in the making, 'Radio Ocean' expands the sound of Gabriel’s sometimes intimate first record into a wider, free-wheeling and eclectic stew, channeling everything from country, to west African guitar riffs, to classic rock, psychedelic funk and freeform jazz. Gabriel Judet-Weinshel > voice, piano, nylon string guitar, clarinet, harpsichord, violin Grace Kelly > alto sax Scott Healy > accordion Shawn Pelton > drums and percussion Chris Tarry > fretless bass Maria Ahn > cello
