About the Album

There are songs that seem to be born from a place where time moves more slowly.

“Caixa dos Gatos” inhabits that space. Between the delicacy of Bossa Nova and the freedom of Jazz, the song seeks a balance between what is carefully designed and what happens in the moment of performance.

The vocals, acoustic guitar, and upright bass of Manoel Cruz form the intimate core of the recording. Around them, Billy Magno on piano, Wagner Bruno on acoustic guitar, and Claudinho Oliveira on drums build a conversation in motion — at times subtle, at times unexpected, but always guided by the music.

The piano, guitar, and drum solos emerge as moments of freedom within this architecture. They do not interrupt the song; they converse with it. Each musician finds space to express something without the ensemble ever ceasing to breathe as a single piece.

The strings, also under the direction of Billy Magno, add another dimension to this universe. Their presence reaches toward the tradition of grand Brazilian concert music without abandoning the intimacy of Bossa Jazz. In this writing, there is an affectionate nod to the orchestral language of Claus Ogerman in his work with Tom Jobim — not as an imitation, but as a memory and a point of departure.

The idea is for the strings not to serve merely as a backdrop for the song. They enter as part of the narrative itself: sustaining, commenting, responding, prolonging certain harmonies, and creating space between one phrase and the next. The orchestra thus appears not to take the foreground, but to expand upon what was already held within the composition.

It is in this dialogue between the intimate and the grand, between silence and density, that “Caixa dos Gatos” finds its identity.

The recording seeks to preserve the sense of proximity of the acoustic instruments, allowing the piano its space, letting the guitar breathe, keeping the bass present and defined, and letting the drums lead the music naturally. The strings add depth without diminishing this intimacy.

Production and mastering were carried out by 88 Major Studio Label, seeking an organic, open, and dynamic sound. Analog and digital processing was used as an extension of the recording itself: adding density and dimension, while preserving the breath, the transients, and the character of the instruments.
