Sin dal titolo MD66 mette in evidenza le linee estetiche di questo progetto di Jim Snidero, che intende omaggiare il secondo quintetto davisiano degli anni Sessanta. Le composizioni originali presentano brevi cellule melodiche come volano per una solida trama ritmica, attraversata da un ottimo interplay.

Non è un disco che ridefinisce il futuro del jazz, ma ne trasmette il senso più genuino grazie ad una sincera comunicativa e a trame musicali altamente godibili. A partire dalla prima traccia, si impongono con grande forza assertiva assoli di alta scuola per tecnica e fantasia esecutiva.

Lo stile non derivativo del leader fa il resto, regalando all'ascoltatore un'opera convincente e di ampio respiro. L'intelligenza esecutiva ha consentito al quintetto di proiettare la tradizione in un ricco alveo creativo, dove convivono i vari fiumi della contemporaneità jazzistica. Ne discende un disco particolarmente riuscito, che lungi da rigidi virtuosismi di maniera, si segnala per equilibrio strutturale e coerenza stilistica.
