The magnificent composer/bassist/producer Marcus Miller performed in front of a jubilant and full house at the luxurious Meritage Hotel & Spa in pleasantly pastoral Napa, California. The August 30, 2024 date was part of a fantastic musical weekend. His torrid set opened with an arrangement of the Dazz Band's 1982 Grammy-winning track "Let It Whip" and closed with the 1988 go-go party pleaser "Da' Butt" written by Miller, and originally performed by Experience Unlimited (E.U.). The song was part of the motion picture soundtrack for the Spike Lee movie School Daze. In between the sizzling session opener and floor thumbing closer, the versatile Miller and his robust band sandwiched in musical tributes and anecdotes about Davis (Tutu"), Jaco Pastorius ("Mr. Pastorius") and soulful vocalist Al Green with a heart stirring medley of Green's classic ballads.

A trio of sisters Bridgett, Susan and Kristen came early to celebrate their late mother at the expansive Blue Note Napa event, and showed appreciation for Miller and company's tribute to David Sanborn, Davis, Green and Pastorius. Afterwards, the bassist reached out and asked one of the three if they liked the set. This new fan replied with a resounding yes and kissed his cheek. She then thanked him for his decades of work and honor to the craft.
