Mingus Big Band: Live at the Jazz Standard
Questo album specifico vive dell'incastro fra i temi (anche molto noti, e importanti) e una generosa rielaborazione improvvisativa, che rispecchia forse solo in parte le istanze originarie (quando all'opera c'erano i Dolphy e i Kirk, gli Knepper e i Byard, ecc.) ma dà comunque brillantemente fuoco alle polveri.
Entrando un po' più nel dettaglio, sottolineeremmo l'efficace (oltre che ovviamente molto spettacolare) chase trombettistica in "New Now Know How," un "Self-Portrait in Three Colors" (ecco uno dei pezzi da novanta) riletto forse sin troppo col freno tirato, un bellissimo prologo, libero e astratto, a "Bird Calls," che poi spicca il volo deciso, una trascinante versione di "E's Flat Ah's Flat Too," dove pure il cantato di Frank Lacy (testo di Elvis Costello) lascia un po' il tempo che trova, la torrenziale intro di Escoffery a "Open Letter to Duke," che poi si articola in curatissimi collettivi in cui spiccano la tuba di McIntyre e un Herring non poco à la Charlie Mariano, la bellezza complessiva di "Moanin".
Insomma, ce n'è d'avanzo per farci passare un'ora abbondante in più che piacevole compagnia.
