Graham Parker and the Rumour: Live at Rockpalast 1978 + 1980 (2CD / 2 DVD)

Graham Parker è stato uno dei rocker inglesi che meglio ha saputo fondere l'energia del rock con la carica virulenta del punk. I suoi concerti dal vivo, della seconda metà degli anni settanta, erano pieni di musica tosta che ricordava in qualche modo l'approccio di band storiche come i Rolling Stones e i Them di Van Morrison. A questo punto il blues non compariva più come riferimento primario ma faceva capolino come rimando filtrato dal rock e dal soul. I suoi due concerti al Rockpalast tedesco ci vengono offerti - in due formati separati - sia su un CD doppio che su un un DVD doppio, i quali riportano esattamente la stessa musica, senza bonus né da una parte, né dall'altra.

Il concerto del 1978 è caratterizzato dalla presenza di fiati nel gruppo corposo (dieci elementi) che si presenta sul palco degli studi WDR di Colonia e riprende il repertorio degli album più famosi che Graham Parker & The Rumour avevano inciso negli anni immediatamente precedenti. Il concerto del 1980 si tenne invece ad Essen. In questa occasione il gruppo è più ristretto (sei musicisti), non ci sono i fiati e c'è invece il veterano Nicky Hopkins al pianoforte al posto di Bob Andrews. In questo caso il repertorio è molto incentrato sull'album The Up Escalator che segnerà anche l'atto conclusivo della collaborazione fra Graham Parker e il suo gruppo storico.

In entrambi i concerti l'energia sprizza da ogni poro della pelle e sul palco si celebra una liturgia rock ben codificata e 'deja vu,' senza particolari sorprese ma allo stesso tempo senza delusioni. Sul palco tedesco i musicisti inglesi danno tutto quello che hanno dentro e alla fine la loro simbiosi col pubblico sembra perfettamente riuscita. In fondo l'essenza del rock è tutta qui.
