Mel Davis: It's About Time!
Eseguiva alla lettera gli insegnamenti dei suoi mentori (George Benson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff) che gli suggerivano i giochi di prestigio più fantasiosi per incantare.
Sembrava l'ascesa per il settimo cielo, invece la musa gli avrebbe cinicamente voltato le spalle: un incidente di lavoro gli porta via un dito della mano sinistra. Alle ortiche anni di aspettative per il decollo dei suoi sogni. Tutt'altro. Lo avrebbero aspettato otto duri anni di riabilitazione e sei dolorissime operazioni alla mano.
Solo un piccolo grande aiuto dagli amici di sempre (George Benson) lo avrebbe rimesso in carreggiata. La collaborazione con Lonnie Youngblood avrebbe poi fatto il resto fino all’esordio del 2004, Irreplaceable, che lo avrebbe portato, dopo altri due CD (MDRC e Mel Lennium), a It’s About Time.
Il lavoro spazia in lungo e in largo nelle accomodanti raffinatezza smooth jazz (la title track, l’irresistibile “Mel Fred”, le cover prestigiose di “Will It Go Round in Circles” - leggere alla voce Billy Preston - o di “13th (Death March), Portrait”, del duo Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery) che fanno di questo CD non un anelito rivoluzionario, ma almeno un sospiro di brezza primaverile tutto groove & soul.
