Jason Forsythe: It's About Time

Trombonist and composer Jason Forsythe's debut recording as a composer, It's About Time, acts as both a declaration and a reflection: a declaration that his extensive apprenticeship with New York's jazz and Latin bands has cultivated a distinctive compositional voice, and a reflection of the various stylistic influences that have shaped his artistry. The nine-track album, performed by a top-tier sextet featuring trumpeter Brian Lynch, tenor saxophonist  Walt Weiskopf, trombonist  Steve Davis, pianist Michael Weiss, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Andy Watson, is a celebration of craftsmanship and collaborative energy.

The opening track, "Fourth Right," sets the tone with a brisk drive that echoes the hard bop era while embracing Forsythe's modern sensibilities. The ensemble's cohesion is immediate and impressive, creating the perfect backdrop for Weiskopf's muscular statement, Lynch's fiery yet melodic solo, and Davis's elegant probing. Weiss proves to be a player with precise technique and an exploratory temperament. "Simple Samba" takes a detour into Latin-inflected territory, a nod to Forsythe's years of experience in that idiom. The tune's structure appears deceptively simple, but its rhythmic interplay is rich with nuance. The relaxed groove and supple melodic lines provide a framework for Lynch, Davis, and Weiss to deliver expressive, lyrical improvisations.

"It's Got To Be Sweetness" embodies what the title suggests, an easy—flowing piece full of soulful charm. There are two extended solos, with Davis offering a wistful trombone line and Lynch's solo delivered with a golden tone, both establishing a deeply satisfying mood. "Home" is introduced by Weiss, providing a crisp, fluid underpinning for the unison playing of the front line. Watson lays down a propulsive beat that supports the solos by Lynch, Weiskopf, Davis, and Weiss, all of which are searching and self-assured. "Outer Limits" is a brisk modern composition that could sit comfortably in the repertoire of any contemporary jazz ensemble. Weiskopf's solo surges with urgency, and Weiss continues to demonstrate that he is a pianist with a precise and polished style. Watson and Okegwo drive the rhythm section with buoyant precision.

The final composition "Sancity" brings the album to a resonant close, a piece of grace and gravitas that unites the whole ensemble. Here, the guest appearances of trumpeter Kenny Rampton and tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin elevate the performances, combining with Forsythe's trombone in a stirring finale.
