Kenny Wheeler: It Takes Two!
Tutti questi elementi si ritrovano puntualmente nei suoi lavori, ma lungi dal creare nell'ascoltatore un senso di ripetizione o di già sentito, generano una piacevole sensazione di familiarità, come per il ritrovamento di un vecchio amico, unita all'ammirazione incondizionata per l'altissima qualità della proposta artistica.
Anche questo It Takes Two!, una delle sue ultime fatiche, non fa eccezione. In compagnia di alcuni vecchi amici (i chitarristi John Abercrombie e John Parricelli, e il contrabbassista Anders Jormin), Wheeler costruisce le sue atmosfere intimiste con la consueta perfezione. L'assenza di batteria e pianoforte fa risaltare l'intreccio delle due chitarre, magistralmente suonate da Abercrombie e Parricelli, che risultano perfettamente complementari anche nei timbri, accoppiando lo strumento elettrico con quello acustico o classico nelle varie combinazioni. Wheeler, dal canto suo, fa ampio sfoggio dell'intenso lirismo che da sempre lo contraddistingue, senza rinunciare però a momenti più sperimentali come le due improvvisazioni collettive o il breve assolo multitraccia di 'Fanfare'. D'altra parte, basta scorrere la sua imponente discografia per rendersi conto che il trombettista canadese ha veramente spaziato su tutto il jazz moderno, prediligendo spesso certe soluzioni più cameristiche per piccoli organici, ma senza disdegnare le incursioni nel free e l'attività con le big band (sue o di altri).
Composto quasi esclusivamente di temi originali (l'unica eccezione è 'Love Theme from Spartacus', anche nel repertorio di Bill Evans), il disco è un'altra gemma nel già ricco catalogo CAMJazz, un gioiello da sottoporre a ripetuti ascolti per scoprirne e apprezzarne le infinite sfaccettature.
