Glam Sam And His Combo: Instrumentals In Colour
The collection opens with "Talk In Colour (The Brixton Jazz Instrumental)." This is the music you want people to hear when they see you on the street in your best clothesfree, easy, fun. The infectious sound might be heard anywhere: blended in a live DJ mix, or played as a jaunty introduction to a festival acteither way, it's guaranteed to lift spirits.
This track's counterpart is "I Talk In Colour (The Disco Jazz Explosion)." This is the version that lifts the song from 'happy' to 'groovy' with infectious momentum. It moves this catchy theme from the local lounge to Ibiza. It's a challenge to nail a standout performance here, but those keys bounce just right, showing off rhythmic interplay. One might think of a player like Joe Sample of The Jazz Crusaders (aka The Crusaders).
Speaking of The Crusaders (whose song, "Mr. Cool" was released in 1984), "Mr. Cool's Groove" opens with a cool balance of buoyant beats and light keys. Then, it takes off, keys moving aside to a funkified organ. The irresistible number comes alive with the addition of spoken word and the alternating keys and organ.
One could argue that there is, indeed, a "summer jazz" style. The music you hear at an outdoor venue, tracks built on steady, relaxed beats that feel warm and easygoing. Tunes that bring the '70s and '80s feel while gently rocking you. The track, "Sweet Summer Nights," meets the criteria.
The guitar sound here is refreshing; of late, there has been an overuse of one specific reverb sound that blurs the tone. The individual notes and pick attacks disappear behind a long "wash" of sound. The guitar here, and the effect, bring a real summer vibe.
The whole album mirrors this feeling of a cheerful gathering, be it a Spanish seaside lounge or an uptown block partyto be played anywhere the venue pulses with laughter, music, and the unmistakable energy of good time.
