Jo Lawry: I Want to Be Happy
La Lawry è versatissima tecnicamente, sia sugli standards che sui brani che provengono dal genere pop come "Until" di Sting, o su cose più eterogenee, come le composizioni di Egberto Gismonti. Non è la sola, ci mancherebbe, però lei ha il pregio di rendere l'album originale utilizzando colori strumentali molto vari e a volta inusuali: la marimba di James Shipp, che dà un sapore minimalista ai brani, il tamburello che da solo la accompagna in "I Have Could Danced All Night," o la chitarra che, anch'essa da sola, le fa compagnia in "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry," o anche un assolo swingante di vibrafono su "Loro," seguito subito dopo da uno di fisarmonica dell'ospite spagnolo Victor Prieto, il canto scat.
Quest'approccio originale ai brani, insieme ai felici arrangiamenti, fanno dell'album un lavoro molto personale, che si pone in un'area che poco a che fare con il neoswing o il folk jazzato di una Norah Jones, anche se i confini sono labili. Il jazz vocale non cerca spesso strade nuove, ben venga quindi, chi, come l'australiana Jo Lawry, riesce a fare qualcosa di grande originalità.
