Bilbao Syndrome: I-V

Babel è un'etichetta, fondata nel 1994 da Oliver Weinding, che ha contribuito non poco a riportare interesse verso il jazz inglese grazie anche ad una sorta di joint venture con il prestigioso Vortex Jazz Club di Londra. Nel corso degli anni ha allargato il campo delle proprie pubblicazioni includendo artisti a cavallo tra jazz, pop e musica classica e, con questo Bilbao Syndrome, spingendosi verso territori prossimi al noise-metal o all'hardcore. Volendo a tutti costi trovare un paragone illustre non possiamo non menzionare i Naked City di John Zorn, o sempre di Zorn il più recente gruppo con Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn e Joey Baron, band, per la verità di altro spessore dal punto di vista delle strategie compositive, della personalità e della rigorosità concettuale.

Sei brani condensati in ventiquattro minuti scarsi, un concentrato di urla luciferine, di feroci chitarre e di bassi elettrici sulfurei, di batteria martellante, e dispensatrice di devastanti bordate di accanimento ritmico. In questo caos da inquinamento acustico emergono a volte con fatica, a volte prepotenti, illuminando l'oscurità scabrosa dei compagni di avventura, le tastiere di Matthew Bourne. Che è pianista, in altri contesti, sofisticato, complesso, avventuroso come testimoniano le sue incisioni per la Evolution Records, etichetta gallese dal catalogo sempre più interessante. E musicista sicuramente curioso, al punto da spingersi all'interno di una tempesta sonora carica di lampi, di tuoni e di polvere come quella scatenata da Bilbao Syndrome, che le sue tastiere contribuiscono a rendere spiritata e visionaria.
